I was always afraid of piercing my agarose gels during filling of wells in electrophoresis. So I used to practice this at the GeneLab in Surat. I started getting more and more interested in the proceedings of the lab. They basically used to diagnose genetic abnormalities and perform karyotyping using FISH. These labs are the first ones of their kind in India. They have an extensive library there. I had nice discussions with everyone there and learnt the details of PCR, cytometry and many other such procedures. How they go about things from scratch, from designing templates to the last steps etc. It was enriching, and by far increased my interest in genetics.
